ATK fought to their first 3 points and Guimaraes threw everything could not change the outcome.

It was a very similar tale for Mumbai City FC and it's fans but with a dissimilar capper. They had to fight it out until the end as always and looked more like the away team in their own fortress. Mumbai City FC were beaten by ATK courtesy of a Robin Singh strike. Alexandre Guimaraes was finally outwitted at home and in what a way.

Teddy Sheringham was bang on in everything he did on Sunday to see his side do the unthinkable at Mumbai Football Arena. As the match ended, a content Teddy Sheringham and a down-in-the-mouth Alexandre Guimaraes met the media to chat about what exactly happened in the game.

Mumbai City FC were outperformed by ATK in the first half, but they rose back in the second. The hosts dominated the second half but to no avail. Guimaraes explained how the game panned out. He said, “The game had one half for each team. When such situation happens, it's the small details that make the difference.”

He continues, “In the second half, our relationship between the players was much better. (In the first half) they played better, (in the second half) we played better. We tried to do whatever we had to do. We created many chances. We were very close but unfortunately, we didn't take the chances we had.”

Mumbai City FC were denied a penalty which could have levelled things for them. Guimaraes didn't conceal the displeasure. He said, “Yes, of course, the guy was from behind. It is very difficult. We have been through different games with different decisions that have hurt us too much.”

Guimaraes thinks that there are a lot of decisions that have gone against them. The level of refereeing has been sub-par. He said, “As the players (appeal), they have to be in that situation and see how to react. Unfortunately, here in our pitch, the other teams put too much pressure on the referees. It's up to them what decisions to take.”

As aforesaid, Mumbai City FC seemed to have lost it in the first half itself albeit the score being 0-0 at the interval. It was the second half where, after the goal, they came forward to try their luck. Guimaraes said, “The other teams also play. Today, ATK’s play pushed us back. During half-time, we talked about some adjustments. Our relationships in terms of distance were much better in the second half.”

We knew it was going to be a very physical game, says Teddy...

The second half saw Teddy's side retreat back and allow the hosts take the baton and try their luck. It was uncharacteristic from ATK to sit back and defend and thus, Teddy had a lot to explain. Teddy said, “A much-needed win. Probably not the best game we played this season. We showed great character. Sometimes you win by playing good football, sometimes you win by digging deep. We certainly had to do that tonight.”

Robin Singh scored the only game of the goal and was the hero for the ATK side. Teddy sounded happy for him. He revelled in the striker's joy. saying, “Robin Singh was one of the team players who did their job and a bit more tonight. I was delighted that he got on the scoresheet as well. He is a great lad and wants to learn more. He has got fantastic attributes.”

Though Robin Singh scored, he had to be taken out of the game a few minutes later because of an injury. ATK have had the highest share among all the teams in the total number of injuries this season. This has not gone well for his team. He dolefully explained his side's sorry state. He reiterated, “If you have seen him, it seems to be pretty serious. It's just one thing after another for us at the moment. He got over his ankle, had a bad knee as well. So we are trying to look at him.”

Among the three games played at Mumbai Football Arena this season, the game against ATK played yesterday had the highest attendance. The Bengalis turned out in large numbers to support the club from their beloved West Bengal. Teddy felt heaven-sent with the amount of support he got from the crowd. He said, “Yeah it was very good. It was great to see them in the little areas, they were fantastic, made a lot of noise as well. All the players thanked them at the end of the game.”

One of the notable things from the match was the booking received by ATK goalkeeper Debjit Majumder for time-wasting. When questioned what was his reaction to it, Teddy answered, “He took longer than he should have taken. So long that he got the yellow card. There was lots of time wasting in throwing the ball away, something you need to cut out from every game.”

Guimaraes said that his side was denied a clear penalty. And so, Teddy's opinion was welcomed on the same. He said, “I think there were a couple of resistances that could have been penalty. I couldn't say from my angle, he was probably thirty yards closer than me. He probably would say that. I can't see any instance of clear penalty from my understanding.”

Mumbai City FC are a team that defends aggressively. With Sehnaj Singh, Nascimento Rozario and Gerson Viera in their ranks, they have some of the most aggressive players in the league. Teddy hence explained how his team approached the game for the same. He said, “We knew it's going to be a very physical game. They have a very physical team and we knew that to get anything out of this game, we will have to play nice football, that we have done all the season, and also would have to match their physicality.”

It was Mumbai City FC vs ATK and many would have seen it as a battle between the two best strikers of the country. It turned out to be the tussle between the goalkeepers and the opposition team. Both Debajit and Amrinder were excellent in between the posts. Teddy looked gratified with his goalkeeper’s performance. He said, “Debajit has got a lot of criticism. He has worked hard in training and has kept his head down. When you work hard, you deserve your rewards and I think he was fantastic tonight.”
