Owen Coyle: We want to provide a team that the fans can be proud of

The coach reiterated his belief that his side can still make the playoffs.

Owen Coyle was moments away from opening his account as Chennaiyin coach in style, had Isaac Vanmalsawma not spoiled the party just before full-time. The Marina Machans and their new coach had to be content with only a point against Jamshedpur FC, who equalized late in the game. The away side took the lead once again through striker Nerijus Valskis, who has been in a rich vein of form. But, Jamshedpur fought back and got their reward in the penultimate minute of regulation time. [KH_ADWORDS type="3" align="center"][/KH_ADWORDS] It would've been a hard-earned victory for the Machans against the pre-game favourites and would've been a massive result against one of the in-form teams in the ISL. Speaking on the result and his first game in-charge, Owen Coyle said, "I enjoyed it. The stadium and the home fans made it a great advert for the league. But, having said that, I'm disappointed not to be sitting here with three points. We put enough into the game and scored a marvellous goal and controlled the first half. We could've had more with 2-3 chances, so we've got work to do. I think we dealt with the pressure well." "I'm pleased with the way we approached it and took the game to Jamshedpur. If we keep performing like that, then that will lead to more wins than draws. Disappointed with the goal, but really pleased with things moving forward with the club," added Coyle. He further explained, "I think they (Jamshedpur) played well. We dominated the first half and they came strong in the second half and we sat back and allowed them to. We hit on the counter and could've scored more with more chances. But, overall, I think it is a fair reflection of the game with the way Jamshedpur played. There is work to do, but I believe the opening signs are good." Having overseen his first game, the twice Premier League Manager of the Month awardee, provided his first impressions of the squad. "I like my teams to play with a high level of intensity. Given the heat, you need supreme levels of fitness. Whatever we wanted to do in the first half we did. In the second half, we had given so much that we needed to save a little bit to begin. The more we work together, the better we will get in those areas. "There is a lot more work to do to make the playoffs, but it's achievable. To do that we have to ensure that when we get into positions like today (in the lead), we should look to avert the pressure on our goal and understand how to win a game and game-management. If we do that then we can still make the playoffs. We want to entertain and win. We want to provide our fans a team that they can be proud of and enjoy watching." Chennaiyin FC next play NorthEast United in a tough away fixture on Thursday. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur next travel to Kochi to play an injury-ridden Kerala Blasters.
