The attacker has previously been part of his country's U-17 setup.

NorthEast United FC are set to add Uruguayan young sensation Martin Chaves to their roster for the upcoming season. The versatile forward is considered as the next big thing in Uruguay and his addition will provide more dynamism in attack for Robert Jarni's side.

Chaves has featured for Uruguayan Primera Division side Juventud de Las Piedras and is highly rated among the locals back in his country. The 21-year-old came up through the ranks at Penarol and has played in age-group leagues for their 'B" side.

He was also a part of the Uruguayan U-17 national team setup and has earned high plaudits in youth football. He has further represented Penarol in the Copa RS Futebol Sub-20, where he was a breakthrough star.

Chaves then joined Brazilian top tier side, Gremio on loan, where he had limited opportunities. The youngster mostly represented their U-20 side, featuring 23 times in the U-20 Championship and scoring twice in the process. He was also a part of the team when they won the China Latin America Cup back in 2017. With limited opportunities, Chaves and Gremio mutually agreed to terminate his contract, as he returned to Penarol.

However, now it will be a completely new challenge for the 21-year-old in India. Chaves will add more flair to the Highlanders side, as his technique with the ball is exceptional. He can play on either flank and also just behind the main striker.

The youngster likes to capitalize on the pockets of space near the penalty area, as his blistering pace and superior control with the ball allows him to get past defenders with ease. Chaves is also sound with his set-piece deliveries and does not shy away from taking a shot from distance.

The Highlanders will hope that the attacker will be able to shoulder the expectations of the fans and will carry forward the Uruguayan legacy at the Guwahati-based club.

NorthEast United were exceptional last season under Eelco Schatorrie, as they qualified for the Indian Super League playoffs for the first time in their history. But, things have gone downhill since then.

Schatorrie has joined Kerala Blasters and consistent players like Bartholomew Ogbeche and Mato Grgic have swapped loyalties with Kerala Blasters and Mumbai City FC respectively. Hence, it will be a tough task for new head coach Jarni, who undoubtedly brings a wealth of experience to the table.

The Highlanders have already renewed Federico Gallego's contract. The Uruguayan midfielder was one of the most important driving forces for the team last season, along with Ogbeche.

The Guwahati outfit have also announced the signing of Argentine forward Maximilian Barreiro who will lead the line this season. The South American touch to this NorthEast United side will definitely help Chaves to adapt to a new country, as the youngster will look to prove his mettle and be worthy of the hype made back in his native.
