The Spaniard also revealed how his team is working on their shortcomings in scoring, having found the net just 11 times in as many matches.
With six wins and three draws from 11 matches, ATK Mohun Bagan are currently at second place in the Indian Super League 2020-21 standings. Under head coach Antonio Habas, the Mariners have managed to meet fans' expectations so far in terms of results and have almost cemented a spot in the playoffs with as many as nine games remaining for them in the league stage.
ATKMB's most recent fixture was against FC Goa on Sunday. In the match that was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Edu Garcia helped the Green and Maroons to a lead in the 75th minute courtesy of a free-kick, but the Gaurs pulled one back just nine minutes later through Ishan Pandita. The contest eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.
Up next, the Mariners face Chennaiyin FC on Thursday and ahead of the match, Khel Now caught up with Garcia. The ATKMB attacker shared with us his thoughts on the free-kick goal and his team's expectations ahead of the fixture against the Southerners. "The most important thing for me is not scoring a goal but the victory of the team. It is always a joy to score a good goal, but the actual honour lies in the team winning," he said, before adding, "I would be much happier if we win the match against Chennaiyin.
When asked about losing points against FC Goa after taking the lead, the 30-year-old replied that it is time to move on from the past. "We really don't want to think about the things already done. Rather we are focused on the next match. We have lost five points against the two teams who, for me are two of the best sides in the league," the 30-year-old explained.
Speaking on his expectations from the next match, he sounded confident and said, "Chennaiyin are a good team, but we want to grab full points against them. We have showcased good strength and I am confident that we can get the job done".
At the same time, Edu Garcia was also quick to express concern on their scoring drought. In 11 matches, ATK Mohun Bagan has scored just 11 goals which is the second-worst tally among all ISL teams this season.
"There are shortcomings in scoring, as we still haven't scored goals like last year and we are working on it. However, we have been in great shape defensively, as the ball has entered our goal only five times so far. That’s a good aspect of our team," he signed off.
