The Men of Steel have the chance to move into the top four with a win on Sunday.

ATK Mohun Bagan are aiming to continue their impressive form in the Indian Super League, as they face a desperate Jamshedpur FC side vying for a win to boost their playoffs chances. The Mariners faced their first defeat of the season to Owen Coyle’s men a few months ago and will themselves be desperate for some sweet revenge.

The Stakes

Being just one point behind Mumbai City FC, ATK Mohun Bagan can’t afford to slip up now. As Antonio Habas himself has indicated, the Mariners want to win all their remaining games to be close to the Islanders before their clash against them in the final league game of the season.

Moreover, they’ll also be vying for payback against Jamshedpur, who handed them a bitter defeat earlier this season. Having scored nine goals in their last three games, the Mariners will be expected to maintain their goalscoring brilliance and know that anything but a win could put a major dent on their AFC Champions League hopes.

On the other hand, being just a few points off the playoffs spots, Jamshedpur FC know that they need to win every single remaining league game. What would be a better way to make a statement of intent about their playoffs ambitions than defeating an in-form, ATKMB?

Owen Coyle’s side outfoxed the Mariners the last time they met them and will aim to do the same this time around. They need to play the game like it’s the ISL final itself and give it their all, because they know that another loss can more or less end their chances of a first-ever playoffs qualification.

Team News

ATK Mohun Bagan are still unlikely to have Edu Garcia back for this game and could go with the same lineup which defeated Odisha FC.

Jamshedpur FC could miss the services of Stephen Eze and Alex Lima, who picked up injuries during the Chennaiyin FC win.

WATCH: Nerijus Valskis scored a brace to help Jamshedpur FC down ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 the last time they met

ATKMB have only faced Jamshedpur FC once in the ISL, losing the reverse game 1-2 earlier this season. The erstwhile ATK had defeated the Men of Steel thrice in five meetings before the merger with Mohun Bagan.

Probable Lineups

ATK Mohun Bagan: Arindam (GK), Kotal, Tiri, Jhingan, Subhasish, Lenny, McHugh, Manvir, Marcelinho, Williams, Krishna

Jamshedpur FC: Rehenesh (GK), Renthlei, Hartley, Lourenco, Doungel, Monroy, Mobashir, Farukh, Grande, Valskis

Man to Watch

Marcelinho (ATK Mohun Bagan)

Since arriving on loan from Odisha FC, Marcelinho has been that spark which ATKMB were missing in their attack in the first half of the season. It’s no coincidence that they’ve scored nine goals in three games since his arrival, with two coming from the man himself. The tricky attacking midfielder adds much-needed creativity and thrust for them, making clever forward runs and linking-up brilliantly with Roy Krishna & Co.

To break down the rigid JFC defence, the Brazilian will need to be on top of his game. With his tendency to produce something special from his crosses, through balls or even brilliant free-kicks, he’ll be the creator-in-chief for the Mariners and could torment the Men of Steel with his unpredictable style in the final third.

TP Rehenesh (Jamshedpur FC)

For Jamshedpur FC, defence will be the strongest form of attack against ATKMB. While they will have to be more clinical in terms of finishing chances, they also have to contend with keeping the Mariners quiet. Their defence will obviously play a major role, but so will goalkeeper TP Rehenesh.

He’s averaged nearly three saves per game for the Men of Steel this season and made five saves in the 2-1 win over ATKMB in the reverse fixture, frustrating them. Rehenesh must remain a lively figure in goal and pull off some heroic saves to annoy the in-form attackers of ATKMB and give his forward men a chance to sneak in a goal or two to record another narrow win for Owen Coyle’s side.

Did You Know?

  • Jamshedpur FC have made 274 successful crosses this season, more than any other side in the ISL.
  • ATKMB now have players (Arindam Bhattacharya and Roy Krishna) leading both the Golden Boot and Golden Glove award tallies.
  • Only Sunil Chhetri (5) has scored more goals than Manvir Singh (4) among domestic players in the ISL this season.
