The midfielder was one of the highly-rated youngsters in the I-League last season.
Sk Sahil has signed a new contract at ATK Mohun Bagan until 2023. The midfielder had a breakthrough season in Mohun Bagan’s I-League-winning campaign in 2019-20. Now, he is set to represent the Kolkata outfit for the next three years.
Speaking about lengthening his tenure with the newfound entity, he remarked, “It is an honour to be given the opportunity to represent my boyhood club and Kolkata in India’s top football competition. I am very excited to play for ATK Mohun Bagan.”
The 19-year-old was an instrumental cog in the midfield setup of Kibu Vicuna in the previous season. He assumed the role of a central midfielder and displayed incredible tenacity, doggedness and a neat passing acumen.
Ever since the abrupt conclusion of the I-League season, reports had circulated that Sk Sahil will secure a move elsewhere. One of the primary reasons behind the surfacing of such news is the fact that Kibu Vicuna was instated as the head coach of Kerala Blasters. As reported by Khel Now, the Spaniard was interested in bringing Sheikh Sahil to Kochi in a complex deal.
However, by extending his stay at the club, the player has joined the likes of Edu Garcia, Jobby Justin, Pritam Kotal and Roy Krishna to stay with ATK Mohun Bagan. With the merger of the two clubs, the management looks keen to retain the core from both squads before venturing to rope in new players in the transfer market.
Sk Sahil recorded a commendable passing accuracy of 87% in the 2019-20 season of the I-League. Antonio Lopez Habas will possibly look to establish him in a holding role in the middle of the park. However, the player will have to adapt to the rigours of the Indian Super League. His approach in doing so will be one of the key talking points in the upcoming campaign.
