The Englishman saw his side secure a point following a stalemate with Chennaiyin FC.
Odisha FC held Chennaiyin FC to a goalless draw in their latest Indian Super League 2020-21 game. While the match was tightly contested, both the outfits seemed satisfied with securing a point each. Stuart Baxter would have liked to build on the victory in the previous outing, but he would not mind one more point on the board and a first clean-sheet of the season.
Speaking to the media in the post-match interaction he touched on several important points. “I am pleased with the players tonight. The defensive performance, especially in the second-half, it was a very good one,” he commented on the performance.
Jacob Tratt’s position in the lineup
The coach was asked if he regretted not playing Australian defender Jacob Tratt in the right-back position from the beginning. Responding to the question, Stuart Baxter said, “Not really, because we were playing in a different way. We were playing 4-3-3 and (Gaurav) Bora was the central midfield player. It was not a natural selection, because he is not only playing at right-back. He is playing centre-back and right centre-back in a three, but it worked out well.”
Marcelinho’s continued absence
The tactician also shed light on the absence of Marcelinho from the team, considering the quality of the player. “Players on the field are doing a good job. Marcelinho needs to be working hard to get himself back into the picture. If he keeps working hard and if we play in a way that accommodates his style of play, then he’s not disadvantaged like any other player.”
Dependency on Diego Mauricio
Another important question that was put forth was the dependency on Diego Mauricio, who has scored half of Odisha’s goals this season. In this context, Stuart Baxter said, “Not really, I think Diego is a goalscorer. So, you hope and expect him to be among the goals. We have not been going through a great spell, in terms of goalscoring and results. When it becomes nervous, maybe you look towards your goalscorers and he gets more of the ball.”
On prospect of facing Chennaiyin FC again
Odisha FC will face Chennaiyin again in three days’ time. The 67-year-old was asked if it provides them with a good opportunity to get three points against the same opposition. He responded by saying, “Well there’s negatives and positives. Negative is that a three-day break again for us, the positive is we don’t need to do as much homework. We have a pretty detailed dossier.
“We’ll have to make some changes because Jacob’s got cards. Whether we play with the same shape or we go back to a 4-3-3, we’ll watch the game through again and make a decision on that,” Stuart Baxter concluded.
