The tactician wants his team to bounce back against the Gaurs after defeat in their previous outing.
ATK Mohun Bagan are aiming to get back to winning ways in the Indian Super League (ISL) when they face FC Goa on Sunday. The Mariners’ dreams of getting the first-place finish in the league were dented by a defeat to Mumbai City FC, but Antonio Habas and his men will be desperate to get their winning momentum back.
Afterthoughts following Mumbai City defeat
The ATKMB tactician definitely believes that his side can return to the top of the table soon, despite a five-point gap with the Islanders. He said, “Yes, we can definitely get back to the top. In the last matches, the story can change.
“If we were perhaps a bit more clinical against Mumbai and had taken the lead, then it would’ve been 1-0 for us and the story would’ve been different. But, this is football and we have to continue our fight to win every day. I’m not thinking about the last match anymore.”
Thoughts on FC Goa
Antonio Habas is also aware of FC Goa’s attacking threat after their latest 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC, but is also confident of his own team’s ability. He said, “We know that FC goa have a good team with good players. But, we also have a good team with good players. Now, it’s up for us to give our best in the 90 minutes in the next match and get the win.”
When asked about whether he believes Goa are stronger than when the Mariners beat them earlier this season, Habas replied, “That last match is in the past. It’ll be a different match this time. We had no injuries and a complete team in the last match, which is not the case anymore. Absolutely, it’ll be a different situation because in football things are never the same.
“FC Goa are a compact team and have some very good technical players. I don’t want to point out any of their special players, but they have very good talent in their hands. I know FC Goa will be a very difficult opponent, but we have our strengths also,” he also added.
Roy Krishna not alone in attack
The Spaniard also shrugged off claims that Roy Krishna is getting lonely upfront for ATKMB, explaining, “I don’t think Roy is playing alone. In the last match, we played all the strikers we have in the team. We played Manvir (Singh), (David) Williams, Roy, Javi (Hernnandez) and Edu (Garcia). We don’t have any more strikers. In football, the opposition also have their defensive values which make it difficult for him at times.”
Happy with performances so far
Antonio Habas also confirmed that Carl McHugh is fully fit for the game, saying: “We have all our available players in perfect condition.” When asked about whether his side are struggling to maintain the rhythm like the erstwhile ATK did last season, Habas said, “Well, it’s different now.
“Last season the opponents are not the same as this season. The teams have recovered in pre-season, they have signed good players and gotten new squads. This is a very different situation. I’m very happy with our performances in the first half of the competition. I believe we have 4-5 points more this season than we did last time out. Maybe, we play better, but our objectives are to get the wins now.”
