Edu Garcia opened the scoring for the Mariners, but Ishan Pandita saved FC Goa with his 84th-minute equalizer.
ATK Mohun Bagan could only manage a draw against the high-flying FC Goa, as the Gaurs came from behind to equalise in a cagey affair. It is another blow for Antonio Habas and his boys in their battle for the top spot in the Indian Super League (ISL) standings.
However, the Mariners’ head coach was content with the result, as the Spanish tactician felt that the draw was a fair result.
“I think there could have been a lot of alternatives for both the teams, but the final score is fair. Maybe, in this alternative, we had the chances to win the game had we scored a goal earlier.
“The goal we conceded was from an error from the set-piece. If you ask me I want to win three points every day, but this one point is very important for us in the context of the league,” the Spaniard said at the post-match press conference.
FC Goa and Mumbai City similar teams?
The Mariners looked a little more positive in comparison to their drab outing against Mumbai City. When questioned about the game, Habas revealed that both teams were very similar and it was only the circumstances that were different.
“I think the match was very similar to the one versus Mumbai City. There was only one difference, that here we had one fantastic chance to score a goal with Edu (Garcia). But, in that game, we did not have that chance and after that Mumbai City scored. Today, we scored first and then the opponent came back,” he added.
Thoughts on lack of chances
ATK Mohun Bagan have not looked great in attack recently and the forwards have not had a similar impact that they had at the start of the campaign. Although Habas believes that it is difficult for the players to create multiple chances when two quality sides are facing each other. He opined, “I think in a big match between two well-prepared teams, it is not possible to create many chances. The difference between the two teams and the players is very less. it is more or less impossible for one team to have 4-5 or more chances.”
One game at a time
After their narrow defeat against the Islanders in their last encounter, the Mariners had to win this match against FC Goa. It was all the more important for Habas’ men to cut the deficit, as Mumbai City dropped points against Hyderabad FC. But, they also could only manage a draw against the Gaurs and failed to capitalize on the chance at hand. However, Habas is not bothered about the table-toppers, as he stated that his focus in on the next game against Chennaiyin FC.
“I don’t know, I am not thinking about Mumbai City. I am thinking about the next game against Chennaiyin,” he concluded.
