The Spaniard spoke ahead of his side's clash against Jamshedpur FC on Wednesday.

Last season’s league leaders FC Goa have had a shaky start to the 2020-21 Indian Super League season. The Gaurs have registered two wins, two draws and three losses in the first seven games. However, their approach to games has been quite positive. Ahead of their next clash against Jamshedpur FC, head coach Juan Ferrando along with goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz addressed the media.

FC Goa’s Mentality

Juan Ferrando wants his side to keep the focus steady for the upcoming match. “For us, it is the focus on the present, to think about the game against Jamshedpur. Of course, I am disappointed with the last game, but we cannot change the result. We can change our present and future, but it is not possible to change the past.”

Maintaining Professionalism

The tactician expects nothing short of consummate professionalism from his players. “We are a professional team. In professional teams, it is very important to think about the present. After Chennaiyin, we need to be positive the next day and be ready for the next game. This is our job. It is the same when we win or lose. The emotions and feelings are better when we win. But, it is important to clear the mentality and to be ready for the next match. We have no time to think about what happened.”

Team’s Untapped Potential

However, Juan Ferrando feels that his side has a lot of potential, which will be unlocked only with time. “I watch all the games. I think about some details. But, for me, it is better to work on the pitch and explain it to the players. I am so sad about the lack of time. Game-by-game we will surely be better. Because we have a very good squad, very good players. They understand the new methodology. They understand that it is a new team and step-by-step it will get better.”

Ball-playing skills of Nawaz

Mohammad Nawaz is one of the few goalkeepers in the subcontinent known for his ball-playing skills. However, he doesn’t want to be known by that alone. “All these things come during training. Even the goalkeeping coach encourages me to do the best. Not only for using the feet, but using my hands. I want to improve more. Everyone notices my ball-playing skills, but I want to be noticed for having strong hands. Whenever it comes to my feet, it is calm and easy for me. It is not difficult.”

Height is not an issue for goalkeepers

He is also one of the shorter goalkeepers in the league. But, height has never been a detrimental aspect for the young custodian. “Sometimes, I feel upset, when I think about my height. But, this is not an excuse. I see many tall goalkeepers making mistakes with high balls. It is all about timing, positioning and decision-making. I have to improve on that. It is not about the height.”

Similarities between Jamshedpur and Chennaiyin

The similarities between Owen Coyle’s current side and his former team will be a key factor for Juan Ferrando’s outfit. A change in mentality would provide the Gaurs with a boost. “I expect more or less the same. The problem was after the late loss to ATK, maybe we did not put all the focus on the next game. We were not too ready against Chennaiyin. We had three days for Jamshedpur. I hope that is enough. It is very important to complete focus,” the Spaniard concluded.
