The interim coach spoke in the aftermath of his side’s morale-boosting victory against the Mariners.
NorthEast United’s interim coach Khalid Jamil answered questions from the media after his side’s astonishing 2-1 victory over ATK Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League at the Fatorda Stadium.
The Highlanders took the lead through Luis Machado, but the Mariners fought back with an equalizer from Roy Krishna. While it seemed like the game might move towards a draw, Federico Gallego stepped up to score the winner and award his side three crucial points, which keep them in line for the playoffs.
Takeaways from victory
Speaking on the result, Khalid Jamil answered, “It is because of the players that we got this win. Not just them, but the supporting staff including the manager. It is because of the collective effort.”
While teams have found it tough to breach the sturdy defence of ATK Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United persevered to put two past them on the evening and that would certainly boost their confidence. Khalid Jamil addressed the effort and said, “It was very tough and they do have a very good defence. But, I think it was all down to the efforts of Khassa (Camara), Gallego, Machado as well. Lalengmawia was better today and it was down to them that we got this great win.”
Thoughts on playoffs race
NorthEast United’s win has opened up more possibilities within the ISL standings, with teams from third to ninth place in contention for the last two playoffs spots. Speaking on the challenge of facing so many teams in the mix, the former Aizawl FC head coach replied, “We are not taking any team lightly. We face a good team next match, so it is important to take it one game at a time.”
