The tactician reflected on his side's entertaining draw against fellow strugglers.
Odisha FC played a 2-2 draw in their most recent Indian Super League 2020-21 fixture against Kerala Blasters on Thursday. Diego Mauricio scored a brace for the Juggernauts, cancelling out strikes from Gary Hooper and Jordan Murray for KBFC. Interim coach Gerald Peyton oversaw his side sharing the points with their opponents in a game which was not short of entertainment.
However, he will be ruing the missed opportunity of doing the double over Kibu Vicuna’s men. During the post-match interaction, the tactician reflected on the game and presented his opinion on several talking points.
Analysis of game
Gerald Peyton assessed his team’s display where they had plenty of chances to win all three points. He summarized the side’s performance, saying, “We had a gameplan, we stuck to the gameplan and that enabled us to really pinch the game in the end. We had two massive chances and could have stolen the game.”
He also lauded the players for a resilient display, something he talked about in the pre-match interaction as well. He continued, “The last game, the penalty in 82nd minute, we lost our way a little bit. But, when we got back into the dressing room and when I spoke to the players I said, ‘Listen lads, we never ever stop playing football, we stick to the plan, we give everything.' That’s what pleased me really, we could have stolen the game because we kept going.”
A word on defenders
The coach praised his defenders, despite having conceded two goals to Kerala. He explained, saying, “I am very happy. I think all season, the defensive line has been under pressure and they’ve handled the pressure very well. We stayed narrow as well.
"I know they had chances, I saw the chances they had missed, but for me, I am delighted with the two goals and two big chances to win the game.”
Absence of Paul Ramfangzauva & Brad Inman’s influence
Paul Ramfangzauva was missing from the lineup on the night, despite Gerald Peyton having praised the youngster. Explaining the midfielder’s absence, he said, “He was injured. As soon as he’s fit, I will put him back in.”
“Brad Inman for me was my outstanding player. He reminded me with some of his touches and how he turned and how he combined with the players. I am very pleased with Brad Inman,” the tactician further added in praise of the Australian.
Call for every member of team to contribute
The question regarding Diego Mauricio scoring the majority of Odisha’s goals was put to the head coach. He answered by saying, “It would be nice if everybody contributed to scoring goals. At the moment, Diego is scoring all the goals, Cole’s (Alexander) scored a few, so it would be nice if the other members of the team also contributed.
“I am going to upset as many managers as possible in the last couple of games,” Gerald Peyton said in context of the remaining three fixtures.
