Must keep getting better
The Islanders’ head coach was adamant that his aim was to keep improving the team. “I said we wanted us to continue getting better. I thought in the first game we got the score that we deserved. In the second game, we played as well, but we didn’t take our chances in those key moments," he began.
"For me, it is about getting better and that’s what we want to do every game. We took our chances in key moments and I felt we have started to show real glimpses of our playing style on a more consistent basis,” the tactician added.
On Vikram Pratap starting
19-year-old Vikram Pratap Singh scored a brace for the Islanders against ATK Mohun Bagan on Wednesday night. Speaking about his decision to start the youngster, Des Buckingham revealed Vikram is just one of the many impressive Indian starlets at the club.
“It’s not just Vikram. We have got a lot of young players in the club and we would like the best Indian players at this football club. Because, we want to develop them and help them move and progress their careers. But when they are here it’s important that they understand the system that we want to play and how they work within it and that is what Vikram has done,” he stated.

Lot of work done since the last match
The Islanders began their season with a victory over FC Goa, however, were beaten by Hyderabad FC in the following game. The win over ATK Mohun Bagan comes at a crucial time and Buckingham revealed that the team have done a lot of work since their defeat in the previous game.
“We only had three days, I think, from the last game. We have done a lot of work on the field, the last two days especially tactically. Players have really taken a shine to it. They are very open to the ideas that we are trying to suggest and not only that, they are starting to implement them on the pitch and that’s a joy to watch for any coach,” the 36-year-old quipped.
Will not get carried away with any result
Despite the comprehensive win, Des Buckingham was adamant that his team will not get carried away with the result against ATK Mohun Bagan.
“I said after the second game, we don’t get carried away with the result. We won the first one, we didn’t get carried away, lost the second. Won’t get carried away with this result. We will just continue to monitor the results in the other games, but we will focus on ourselves. How we want to do what we want to do. We have a game in three days' time again so it’s important we focus now on that,” he concluded.
