Ex-Mumbai City star Cy Goddard joins Central Coast Mariners

The 24-year-old helped Mumbai City FC to a domestic double last season.

Former Mumbai City FC winger Cy Goddard has put pen to paper with Australian outfit Central Coast Mariners, the club announced on Friday. Despite being fairly young at 24, Goddard is already a journeyman of sorts. He has has now joined the Australian Mariners on a two-year deal after a historic season in India’s top flight.

“I am so excited to land inn Australia and get started. Hopefully we can have a good season and I can play an integral role. May this, in turn, helps the Mariners achieve their season goals.” Cy Goddard said.

What Officials said

“I have been in consultation with Cy Goddard many times since we first indicated our interest in bringing him to the Coast. In every conversation, he has impressed me with both his character and his positive mindset. He is a very talented footballer and one who I think will look right at home in the A-League.” said Mariners Head coach Nick Montgomery.

The Tottenham academy has produced a wealth of talent over the years. We are confident that he will be a great asset to our roster. He is a talented wide attacking midfield player. His task will be to provide our front men with quality attacking moments. Goddard brings with him an impressive CV of international experience and he will create strong competition for spots among the squad.” said Head of Football Ken Schembri.

His Football Journey

Cy Goddard has come through the ranks of Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur. He has made appearances for their U18, U21 and U23 team.

After leaving the UK, the Anglo-Japanese winger signed for Serie B side Benevento on a 3-year deal in 2018. His time in Italy wasn’t worth remembering as he spent most of time on the bench during his first season and made just two appearances. In 2019, he moved to Cypriot first division side Pafos where he played 6 matches. The following season, Goddard was brought on loan by Mumbai City FC where he played 19 matches, scored a goal and assisted thrice. After completing his contract with his parent club Benevento, Goddard will now travel to Australia.

The 24-year-old has represented his native country Japan on the international stage with their U16 and U17 teams. He is a multi-faceted forward who can play as a winger and also as an attacking midfielder.
