The Mariners failed to secure the three points after taking the lead.

ATK Mohun Bagan were unable to change their winless record against Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), playing out a 1-1 draw against the defending champions on Thursday. The Mariners started strongly and got the lead through David Williams in the ninth minute. However, an unfortunate own-goal from Pritam Kotal helped Mumbai get back into the game. ATKMB head coach Juan Ferrando was frustrated to see his side unable to wrap up the win.

Here's what the ATK Mohun Bagan head coach said at the post-match press conference.

Thoughts on result

He said after the game, “In the end, for me, I had a lot of triumphs. We had chances to get three points, but we didn’t get them, which is a problem. The own-goal is okay, but we had a lot of chances to win the game.”

Areas to improve

When asked about what areas the team could’ve done better, Juan Ferrando explained, “I think like all the teams it’s difficult to prepare the lineups. As you know, Roy (Krishna) is struggling with an injury, (David) Williams had to be taken off in the 55th minute because of injury. Kiyan (Nassiri) is struggling with injuries. A lot of players are having trouble with injuries.

"(Joni) Kauko played the first game in 15 days. It’s very difficult, but when the team tried with their build-up, their team play and pressing, I’m very happy with those. But, to be honest, it’s a pleasure when in difficult circumstances the team tries to work hard and I’ll try my best to support them.”

Joni Kauko's return

Speaking about his thoughts on Kauko’s much-awaited return to action, Ferrando said, “We’ll see. Yesterday, he had his first training session for 40-45 minutes. It’s not good because the risk of injury for Kauko right now is very, very high.

"When the players are in a room and not training, there are injury problems. But, it’s the same with all the teams because injuries can be troublesome.”

Not starting Roy Krishna

When asked about why Roy Krishna didn’t start once again, Juan Ferrando stated, “Because he’s just not ready. Like in the last game against Odisha, he had problems with his hamstring in the 62nd minute, wasn’t ready against Hyderabad and then didn’t play against SC East Bengal. He wasn’t in the squad because he isn’t ready. But, he’s on the road to recovery.”

Sandesh Jhingan's role in team

Talking about Sandesh Jhingan’s role in the team and how he can play a part going forward, the ATKMB tactician said, “For him, it’s pre-season right now. For us, it’s important to not take a risk with injuries. Sandesh is training now, but of course, he’s not working at his 100% because we don’t have the time to work with the entire team together.

"But, it’s good that he’s in the squad now, that’s because he’s working with the team. He’s in pre-season now. The intensity of the games is very high and it’s necessary to protect him.”
