Mumbai City FC have confirmed the siging of Spanish striker Igor Angulo for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season. The Spaniard joins on a free deal after being released by FC Goa earlier this year. The 37-year-old striker impressed for the Gaurs last season, also winning the Golden Boot award.
Angulo will join up with the Islanders for the 2021/22 ISL season after being released by Goa. He was not selected by the Gaurs for the AFC Champions League campaign, raising question marks about his future. However, Mumbai has confirmed that he will stay in India for the next season and lead their line.

The defending ISL champions are undergoing major changes in their foreign contingent from last season. Hugo Boumous was signed up for a record fee by ATK Mohun Bagan. Adam Le Fondre and Cy Goddard have returned to their respective loan clubs. As a result, the Islanders have been forced to introduce new faces who are well suited to the ISL.
About the player
Igor Angulo, a product of the Athletic Bilbao youth academy, excelled in his first ISL season. He scored 14 goals in 21 appearances for the Gaurs, boasting an impressive 27% goal conversion rate. Despite his age, the 37-year-old’s energy, pace, and decisiveness in the final third impressed many.
In his nearly two-decade-long career, the Spanish striker has played for many clubs – including Athletic Bilbao and Segunda Division side Numancia. His most prolific stint came with Polish side Gornik Zabrze, with whom he scored 88 goals in 154 appearances.

Angulo even scored in FC Goa’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Mumbai last season, catching Sergio Lobera’s attention. He fit into the Gaurs’ style with ease and acted as a leader in attack – urging everyone forward. The Spaniard’s determination, hunger for goals, and impressive link-up play made him one of the league’s best strikers.
The 37-year-old only becomes the third foreign player in Mumbai City’s current squad, alongside Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall. The Islanders are expected to sign three more foreign players, including one to fit their Asian quota for next season. The Islanders will embark on their title defence in the ISL when it begins in November. He should join up with the squad a few months before that for pre-season training in Goa. Overall, Igor Angulo will be expected to continue his heroics and aim to win another Golden Boot as well as helping Mumbai maintain their dominance in the league.
