FSG are the major stakeholder of the club.

A consortium led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is finalising an agreement to acquire nearly one-third of Liverpool Football Club’s stake.

According to Sky Sports, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Anfield club’s major stakeholder since 2010, are expected to announce a transaction as soon as this week.

Mr Bezos will join an investing group that includes Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of the social network Facebook.

The syndicate is chaired by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel mogul Lakshmi Mittal and previously a shareholder in Championship team Queens Park Rangers.

Liverpool, valued at approximately $6 billion, would remain under Fenway Sports Group (FSG) as the majority owner.

One insider stated that a statement was expected in the coming days, but cautioned that it may happen next week.

If the transaction is finalised, a trio of the world’s wealthiest individuals would become co-owners of the Reds, one of the most successful clubs in English football.

Forbes estimates that Mr Bezos alone is worth more than $280 billion, while Mr Saverin is worth more than $32 billion.

While Mr Bezos isn’t traditionally associated with football, his potential name in the Liverpool FC ownership demonstrates the extent to which affluent investors increasingly regard sport as an asset class in its own right.

Mr Saverin, 44, was part of a syndicate that mounted an unsuccessful buyout attempt for Chelsea FC during the 2022 auction sparked by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Liverpool last won the Premier League championship in 2024-25, and are now under a major rebuild after key players left and under the guidance of new manager Andoni Iraola.
