Zinedine Zidane worried by increasing injury list at Real Madrid
Ferland Mendy joins Brahim Diaz and Marco Asensio on the sidelines due to his calf injury.
Real Madrid play their cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid in New Jersey in their ongoing pre-season tour. Ahead of the International Champions Cup game, head coach Zinedine Zidane expressed his worry with the increasing injury list of his players.
During their previous game against Arsenal, Marco Asensio was stretched off the pitch with reports suggesting that the player would be out for atleast 9 months, easily missing the 2019-20 season.
“We’re gutted for Marco, we care about him. The players have supported him. It is a bad injury, I hope he comes back even stronger. We did well against Arsenal but it was a shame about Marco. The good things are less important than Marco’s injury,” said Zidane about Asensio’s torn ACL.
And following that, Real's new left-back Ferland Mendy is out with a calf injury and is out for a couple of weeks at best. “Injuries are a concern for me. Marco’s injury, Ferland’s injury, which is minor. He won’t be able to play for us. We don’t know how long he’ll be out, but that can happen in preseason. I hope he recovers quickly.”

"Afterwards(the pre-season), we’re heading back to Madrid to focus on LaLiga. Nothing has changed, I am not thinking about who will play for Marco. We are frustrated by the injury."
Marco, who vastly flourished under Zidane at Real Madrid, was expected to be one of the main players this season.

Adding to that, midfielder Dani Ceballos has also left the club on a loan deal for Arsenal and the head coach said, "It is not that he didn’t fit into my plans. He needs more minutes, he is a key player. He didn’t get enough playing time at Real Madrid. That’s all there is to it, there is some strong competition here, nothing more. I hope he plays plenty of games and does well."
