Louis Van Gaal criticizes Ajax’s call for Eredivisie to be voided
The 68-year-old tactician feels there is ample time in the summer to finish the league as the Euro is cancelled.
Veteran tactician Louis Van Gaal has lambasted his former side Ajax for calling the Eredivisie season to be cancelled and them to be named champions amid the coronavirus outbreak in the Netherlands.
Louis Van Gaal has stated that Ajax are using the coronavirus concern to their own advantage in order to take the shortcut into winning the Dutch league title once again.
He spoke to Dutch Outlet AD on the matter and said, “If it is established that the coronavirus has been defeated, you first have to finish the current competition. Sport is there to designate a winner on the field. Not to say after 25 matches we cut things off and Ajax is champion.
“But while the government has also been following the experts for weeks, some football clubs suddenly say that it is not possible - Ajax first. Clubs that misuse this corona crisis for their own gain and then make it a public health statement. I'm a man who can't take that," Louis Van Gaal added.
The former Netherlands national team manager has suggested that the season be resumed in June or July when it’s safe to do so, especially after the Euro 2020 was postponed by a year in order to ensure that the domestic and UEFA competitions can be completed.
He explained, “You can also play the season out in June or July. There is plenty of time this summer, the European Championship is off the calendar.
“And if UEFA and FIFA are willing to change rules and provide space, well then get started.”
This criticism comes after Ajax’s Director of Football Marc Overmars had suggested that it’d be best if the Eredivisie season was to be cancelled and for his side to be named as champions.
Ajax are currently at top of the league, but just barely as they sit on same points as AZ Alkmaar but just pip them in terms of superior goal difference.
There are still seven game weeks of football remaining and with Ajax knocked out of the UEFA Europa League, their only obligation remains those of the domestic competitions.
Louis Van Gaal had managed both Ajax and AZ Alkmaar in his career, but his most memorable achievement came with the former as he helped Ajax win the Champions League in 1995 with an extremely talented young core who would go onto boast decorated careers all around.
