What now for Manchester United as side struggles for form under Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim’s rocky start – A false dawn at Old Trafford?
It is now more than a decade since Sir Alex Ferguson marked the final season of his lengthy tenure in charge of Manchester United with yet another Premier League title, and it appears that the Old Trafford side have never looked so far away from adding to their total of 20 top tier domestic championships.
For all Erik ten Hag’s faults, and there were many, the Dutch boss did at least pick up two trophies over the course of his nearly two and a half years in charge of the Premier League team. When the former Ajax boss was replaced by Ruben Amorim, who had enjoyed incredible success at Sporting Lisbon, many may have felt that the club were set to turn a corner; instead, they’ve only found themselves hitting yet another cul-de-sac.
Manchester United fans who feel that the Portuguese manager has what it takes to steer the club in the right direction towards a trophy or two, perhaps even this season in the Europa League, may want to consider making use of these sports betting promo codes to help make such a wager less of a risk, but even doing so could be considered the mark of a very optimistic individual indeed.
While Amorim’s reign to date involves the young manager having to make do with the squad he inherited, even that can’t excuse some of the performances of late, ones that have left him exasperated and making some very unsettling comments, albeit ones that are brutally honest and accurate, such as those uttered after a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton.
“We are being the worst, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.” was the now infamous quote, and though it’s a shocking one, it’s also potentially one that can not be disagreed with, at least not when it comes to a description of the team in the Premier League era.
In the 14 Premier League games since Amorim took charge, Manchester United have collected just four wins and suffered eight defeats. In his last two games they fell to losses at home to Crystal Palace and away at Tottenham, with these leaving them in 15th position in the table.
Indeed, the only reason the club are not really in danger of relegation is the fact that there are some truly woeful teams in the division this time around. Amorim will already be looking to the summer and a serious recruitment drive. Over January, he offloaded, albeit on loan, both Antony and Marcus Rashford, two players who have failed to prove their worth but have, somewhat predictably, now started to show signs of life at both Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively.
There is a sense that Amorim is merely looking to see out the season with little care as to how their league form transpires and with the cups as a distraction. He’ll want to rebuild and will no doubt spend a fortune, but what level of player can he hope to lure in?
Ten Hag was in a similar position and almost universally failed in regard to the acquisition of actual talent, and should Amorim suffer a similar fate, one can expect another manager to be in place a year or two from now.
The clearest sign as to how far Manchester United have fallen is the level of quality, or lack thereof, in the attacking third. For a team of Manchester United’s standing to have the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as their first-choice strikers is truly astonishing and is a sign of how far they have fallen.
It’s yet to be seen if Amorim is the right man to help United turn the corner, but after just a few short months in situ, one already has something of a sense of deja vu about the whole situation.
