Jose Mourinho: Focus should be on Rudiger and not Son

The Portuguese spoke after his side fell to a loss against Frank Lampard's Blues at the weekend.

Newly-appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho aimed a couple of digs at Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger after a tussle between the German and Heung-min Son saw the latter sent off as a result of a VAR decision. The on-field referee, Anthony Taylor had not penalised Son for his reaction to being fouled. However, in another contentious VAR ruling, Paul Tierney in the review box decided differently and called for the South Korean to be sent off. [KH_ADWORDS type="3" align="center"][/KH_ADWORDS] In the aftermath to the match and a couple of trademark snide comments from Jose Mourinho, Spurs have decided to appeal against the decision. This, although, came before the match was plunged into further controversy when Rudiger was allegedly subjected to racist chants from the Spurs faithful. Jose Mourinho sarcastically wished the defender well for his “broken ribs” in his post match press conference. The Portuguese emphasised that the reaction of the German should be what is in focus. "I hope the Premier League is still the Premier League and will always be the Premier League and I think the focus should be on Antonio Rudiger and not on Son," he said. "I'm not speaking about the racism incident, this is another thing. I am speaking about that incident, the red card," continued Jose Mourinho, "In the Premier League, I love there is no space also for what Rudiger did. Stand up and play man. This is the Premier League." "In some countries, especially now Latin cultures, you go to Latin America, Portugal, Spain, Italy and that happens, it is a cultural thing, but not in the Premier League. The moment we try to punish the reaction of some player, insignificant reaction, but you try to punish and you let it go the other one, it is because then you become part of it (complicit)." [KH_ADWORDS type="4" align="center"][/KH_ADWORDS] The Portuguese went on to take a dig at the German defender. "Come on, do you think Rudiger plays the next game or do you think he's injured? I think he plays. And we speak about Son and don't speak about him." The sending off comes as Son’s third of the calendar year, having been sent off in games against Bournemouth and Everton for acts of petulance earlier in the year. The North London side have appealed against both these charges in the past, winning the latter. Yet, Jose Mourinho stuck by his player, insisting that he did not have a temper problem and that his reaction to the foul by Rudiger was nothing more than a mild outburst of emotion. "A tiny reaction is an emotional reaction but is still an emotional reaction with control," the Portuguese said, as per Evening Standard. "I don't think it is different, what happened with (Mateo) Kovacic and Dele (Alli) (both players booked for grappling), with what happened with Son and Rudiger." To send somebody home and to stop him doing his work and be on the pitch is not about insignificant, it is about significant. "If you do an accumulation of insignificance then is when you arrive at the accumulation of yellow cards and you have two yellow cards for insignificant fouls you go out. "But when you do in the game one insignificant foul that is not a red card, that is a yellow card."
