Ruben Neves: My most important goal for Wolves was against Cardiff City
The Portuguese midfielder also pointed out several other goals which he deems to be the highlight of his career.
One of the most integral part of Wolverhampton Wanderers' squad since his joining in 2017, Ruben Neves has established himself as one of the most impactful midfielders in the Premier League. While the journey at West Midlands have been eventful for the Portuguese, he looks back at the time with his side and feels it was his goal against Cardiff City on 6th April 2018 that was the most important in his time with the Wolves.
“It was a hard game, a really hard game for us and a really hard pitch to play at. They were fighting with us for the first place of the league, but I believe, as we did for much of the time that season, our spirit was unbelievable," Ruben Neves told to Wolverhampton Wanderers' media team.
“When we play like that, with that spirit, we can win in every stadium,” he added.
Wolves finished at the top of the EFL Championship table in the 2017-18 season and were promoted to the Premier League in the following season. Cardiff City were also promoted to the Premier League, as they finished as runners-up to the Wolves that season.
However, when these two sides met on April 6 in 2018, a tricky situation arose as both sides were unable to score in the first hour, before Ruben Neves scored the winner in the 67th minute.
Speaking about the preparation about the game, Ruben Neves recollected, "There are always changes, game by game. It always depends on the opponent and how they play, as we need to adjust ourselves to play against team.
“Cardiff was not different. We prepared the game just for the way that Cardiff plays and we had a good week before that.
“Nuno can give us a lot of information about their team, and it was really good work from the staff in the week and then from us to take that to the pitch.”
The midfielder also revealed that his 'most important' goal for the Wolves came against Cardiff City in the 2017-18 season, however, described his 'goal of the decade' against Derby Country as a 'special' one.
“For the club, my most important goal was the Cardiff one, because they were second at the time and that win gave us a really good distance from them.
“But the Derby County goal was a special one. I just didn’t want to lose the ball!”
The Portuguese also spoke regarding the top goals he scored in his career. “I don’t have a top five list. It’s hard to say which goals are better than others, but the top one is definitely Derby County," he revealed.
“If I was to put them in order, for me it would be: Derby County first, second is one I scored for Porto against Academica away, then the third one is Sheffield Wednesday away, fourth Sheffield United at home and the fifth is Man United from this season," Ruben Neves continued.
“I would put that over Espanyol because the Man United one was a hard movement to do and I needed to be really fast as my first touch was so bad, so I needed to give it another one, but fortunately I was fast enough to score," he concluded.
