Italy has the most number of casualties and has contributed a third of the global death count.
Club presidents of Fiorentina (Rico Commisso) and Torino (Urbano Cairo) voiced their apprehension giving increasing evidence that the current Serie A season won’t come to a conclusion. Serie A and other football leagues have been postponed indefinitely due to the devastating outbreak of coronavirus that has laid waste to many lives, particularly in Italy which has the most number of casualties and has contributed a third of the global death count.
In such cases, the two heads of the clubs maintain that it looks increasingly unlikely that the season might restart anytime soon and the postponement could also have a negative domino effect with regards to next season with the Euros and the Copa America events also postponed to the summer next year.
Fiorentina president Commisso spoke in a radio interview to Italian channel RAI(via Reuters) stating, “Let’s think about health now, we’ll talk about football later. We’ll see if we can get back to training. But there’s a serious possibility that the championship won’t end.”
Torino president Urbano Cairo reiterated the concerns put up by Commisso in a separate interview with RAI. He said, “Even if the teams start training again in May, there would be no time to complete the championship. That would mean starting training at the end of May and then starting the games at the end of June, playing in July and August.”
“Then give everyone a month off, a month to train and you would not start the next championship before November. It can’t be done,” added Cairo.
In the case that the season might not see the end, if the authorities decide to go with the move of awarding the title to the team at the top, the trophy would once again land in Turin as record-holders Juventus are in pole position and are a point ahead of second-placed Lazio and nine ahead of third-placed Inter Milan who have a game in hand.
But Cairo advised strongly against handing the title to his cross-town rivals for a ninth successive season in a row. “It should not be assigned because the championship isn’t over and there are three teams in the running,” Cairo replied when asked about this.
Fiorentina and Torino are currently not enjoying the best of seasons with the former down at 13th place in the table and the club from Turin is three points behind them in 15th. Torino also had an early-season let down as they crashed out of the Europa League in the final qualifying round to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
