Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Wayne Rooney showed Scholsey like passing range

The Red Devils' highest goalscorer will host his former club on Thursday.

Manchester United travel away to play Derby County in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Thursday and the Red Devils are set to meet their old foe and club's all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney.

The game will be played on Thursday at the Pride Park Stadium. After scoring six past Tranmere in the fourth round, Solskjaer's men would want to continue their good run of form and storm into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talked the media before the eliminator to speak about the game and the player that Wayne Rooney has been for Manchester United.

Solskjaer and his team know what Rooney means to the club fans. The Norwegian boss of the Red Devils has ensured that Rooney will be given a good reception by the fans.

He said, "Rooney has been a fantastic player for Manchester United, and he has played for so long. He's the club's top scorer and has won so many trophies. I think everyone appreciates what he did for us and he is still very welcomed. He will get a very good reception from the away fans."

However, Ole also believes that the reception has to be restricted to the fans and that his players need to be at their very best to contain a motivated Wayne Rooney. He knows that there's still fight in the old dog and that any space provided in or near the box could hurt their chances of winning the game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also acknowledged the abilities of the former English captain in the midfield and even went on to compare his passing range with that of another United legend and a former teammate of Rooney, Paul Scholes.

He explained, "He's a great threat in and around the box. Wayne will show what he can do, and he wants to prove that there's still fight in an old dog."

"So we have got to be on our toes and not give him any space in and around the box or in midfield because at the latter stages when he played in the midfield, he showed Scholsy like passing range," Ole Gunnar Solskjaer concluded.
