Luis Enrique: I am the only reason why Robert Moreno is not in my staff

The Spanish tacticians worked together at FC Barcelona for three years before coming on board for the national team.

Luis Enrique has made his official return to Spain national team as their head coach. He had resigned from the post in June 2019 to take care of his daughter Xana, who unfortunately passed away due to bone cancer in August. Upon his return, he lambasted and said that he felt betrayed by his former assistant coach Robert Moreno. Spain qualified to the Euro 2020 without any fuss courtesy Moreno but he apparently had to leave his job in tears and refrained from talking to the media after the final qualifier. Now, he explained the whole situation after resuming his role as the gaffer of the Spaniards. Enrique said, “I feel like I have come back home. It’s a special day for me and my family. I am a person who usually steers clear of controversy but today I feel obliged to give an explanation because this is about someone I worked with for many years.” “I am the only reason why he [Moreno] is not in my staff. The fall-out comes from a meeting we had on September 12 at my home. It’s the only day we had contact. We had a 30-minute meeting and I understood that he wanted to take charge of the team in the Euros [next summer] and to then go back to being my No 2 afterwards." “And, in that moment, I try to put myself in the other person’s shoes. I understand that he wanted to take the opportunity of his life. I understand that he is ambitious and that’s a quality to admire but, for me, that’s also disloyal and for me that is a defect." “I understand his position but I don’t share it and I would not have done that. I said I wanted to come back. Moreno deserves applause for his work with the side but there was arguably no doubt that Enrique would be reinstated at the top post once he is back, especially given the circumstances that surrounded his personal life when he left the job. He provided a stunning end to his explanation which was received with a warm acclamation by the reporters in the press conference. Enrique remarked, “I have no reason to criticise him professionally. As far as the personal goes, I had no doubts until the words said one thing and the actions said another. I am not the good guy in the film. But I’m not the bad guy either.” The Spanish national football team would now play their next encounter in March 2020 as the pre-tournament friendlies would take place then.
