Sporting Goa down Cavelossim in GPL
Victorino Fernandes played an important role in the Flaming Oranje's victory with a goal and an assist.
Sporting Clube de Goa continued their unbeaten run in the league as they trounced 10-men Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 2-0 in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
With today’s win, Sporting managed to overlap Dempo at the top with 18 points from eight points, whereas the South Goan club has six points from seven outings.
Sporting were the only unbeaten side in the league where they had recorded four wins and three draws. Their last match against Guardian Angel SC ended in a 1-1draw. On the other hand, Cavelossim had suffered narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Salgaocar FC in the previous round match.
Cavelossim had two changes to their side from the last match as Allwyn Vaz and Darren Fernandes made way for Perryson Fernandes and Cayven Araujo in the starting XI. Sporting gaffer Mateus Costa made changes in the wholesale as Goalkeeper Ozen Silva and start striker Victorino Fernandes made the start, while Alesh Sawant, Avrhishto Fernandes, Peter Carvalho and Nigerian midfielder Philip Odogwu were also included in the playing XI.
Sporting took eight minutes to create their first potent chance as Quan Gomes tried his luck from distance but rival keeper Siddesh Morje pushed his powerful shot for a corner.
Cavelossim came close to scoring exactly after same minutes when Cayven curled the ball to well-positioned Perryson in the box but the striker failed to connect from close.
At the other end, Sporting once again came with an attacking move when Avrhishto sent a long ball to Victorino in the box, who nicely controlled it and released it to Nigerian Philip but the midfielder shot wide from six yards.

Cavelossim were reduced to 10-men in the 38th minutes when Cayven elbowed Sporting’s Quan on the face as referee Sunil Nanodkar sent off the winger with the straight red card.
Sporting had another chance at the closing stage of the first session when Avrhishto made an excellent through ball to Victorino in the box but the striker saw his shot brilliantly saved by keeper Siddesh.
Sporting opened their account with just 40 seconds in the second half as Victorino initiated the move with a pass to Alesh on the flank who brilliantly curled in the box to the striker who calmly beat the keeper Siddesh with a clinical finish making it 1-0 for the Flaming Orange.
Sporting coach brought in Mauvin Borges replacing Nigerian Philip in the 59th minutes and the midfielder delivered in the very next minutes when he tapped in from close to Victorino’s cut-back pass from inside the box to double their lead.
The dying minutes of the match witnessed Sporting completely dominating over rivals but could not capitalise on their chances as Victorino wasted two easy chances with just keeper to beat, while a few minutes later, substitute striker Daryl Costa wasted another chance in the similar style.
