The Blue Tigers skipper joins 27 past and current players in the awareness video.
Indian national football team’s captain Sunil Chhetri has been chosen by FIFA as one of the 28 past and current players to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has collaborated with the sport’s international governing body, FIFA, to raise an awareness campaign where these individuals ask the people to follow five crucial steps and accordingly stay safe from coronavirus.
These five directions include: hand washing, coughing etiquette, not touching your face, physical distance and staying home if feeling unwell. The ongoing campaign is named ‘Pass the message to kick out coronavirus.’ Most importantly, the other prominent international stars included in this engagement are Lionel Messi, Phillip Lahm, Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol amongst others.
To widespread the outreach and message conveyed through this, the video is published in 13 languages. The mission was virtually launched from the headquarters of WHO in Geneva, Switzerland. Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino have been actively involved in passing the message against this pandemic since the very beginning.”
Football has been adversely affected due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Most of the major leagues across the world have been halted for the time being, with uncertainty surrounding the completion of the current season. Additionally, even the Euro 2020 and Copa America 2020 have been postponed to the next calendar year.
Moreover, the team also failed to progress to the group stages of the AFC Cup too and hence the captain is at his home now. Recently, he did a Q&A session on his Twitter handle too and answered quite a lot of questions from his inquisitive followers.
