Kharsyntiew praises his players, Popovic congratulates Lajong for the win
The Northerners scored the winner in injury time of the game.
FC Pune City were stunned by a brilliant comeback from Shillong Lajong FC in their pre-quarterfinal fixture of the Hero Super Cup to lose 2-3 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. The Stallions took a comfortable double lead early in the game through Jonatan Lucca and Marcelinho’s stunning strikes, before conceding a penalty in injury-time which Samuel Lalmuanpuia successfully converted, after Abdoulaye Koffi and Rakesh Pradhan had brought the scoreline at par.
Alison Kharsyntiew, the winning team’s coach was present in the post-match press conference and lauded his young players for displaying determination after the initial setback. “In football, if you score an early goal, it can affect the team’s morale. But the boys showed character and they did not give up,” he stated.
When asked what instructions he gave at the half-time break which managed to turn the game over its head, he replied “There was no pep talk actually. Before the game, I told my boys to give their 100%. So after going 2-0 down, I want to congratulate the boys for their character and a good attitude.”
