Some usual suspects kept banging in goals through the course of the year.

Football as a sport saw a lot of ups and downs in the year 2020. However, despite the topsy turvy year that it was, some players continued to thrive. There were many individual players that kept up their form throughout the year despite the lockdowns and phases where there was no football being played.

Be it in front of the fans in the early stages of the year, or behind closed doors, these players remained unfazed and continued to score plenty of goals for their respective clubs.

Here are the top ten players that scored the most number of goals in the calendar year of 2020 in the top five European leagues:

Lionel Messi - 19

Lionel Messi has had an eventful year to say the least. His potential exit from FC Barcelona dominated the headlines more than his on the field contribution. While Messi created a record for most assists in a Spanish La Liga season in the 2019/20 campaign, he managed 19 goals only in the whole of 2020, which is reflective of the club’s performances as well.

Francesco Caputo - 19

Sassuolo’s prolific striker Francesco Caputo has had an incredible year in the Italian Serie A. The striker is performing consistently well at 33-years-old and has racked up 19 goals in the calendar year. Kylian Mbappe - 19

Paris Saint-Germain’s superstar, Kylian Mbappe also scored a total of 19 goals in the year 2020. Some might say that this tally is less than what the Frenchman is truly capable of. While Mbappe has suffered from an inconsistent phase a few times in the year, he was crucial to PSG’s march into the UEFA Champions League finale, where they unfortunately lost the eventual winners, FC Bayern Munich.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 20

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been in scintillating form in the latter part of the year for AC Milan and has been the leading goalscorer in the Serie A scoring charts during the 2020/21 campaign. Having scored a total of 20 goals in 2020, the Swede has been central to Milan’s resurgence in the league. The 39-year-old has scored 10 goals in merely six league appearances.

Romelu Lukaku - 22

Romelu Lukaku is always amongst the goals and has continued to contribute for his current employers in Inter Milan. The striker scored a total of 22 goals in 2020 and was central to Nerazzurri’s title challenge last season, when they missed out on the trophy to Juventus by a single point. In the ongoing season, Lukaku scored 11 goals in 13 appearances for the club.
