The Argentine is on the radar of a number of elite European clubs ahead of the transfer window.
The summer transfer window is approaching quickly as clubs are swirling around the usual transfer buzz. For clubs needing defensive replacements, the name of Nicolas Tagliafico is making rounds. The Argentine left-back has caught the attention of a number of top clubs with his performances at Ajax. He has made 138 appearances for the Dutch club, scoring 13 goals and registering 19 assists. He has also represented Argentina 28 times, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Copa America in 2019.
The defender has won the Eredivisie once (2018-19) and two KNVB Cups with Ajax. He was also a part of the Ajax squad that reached the UCL semifinals, defeating Real Madrid and Juventus in the process.
Currently valued at €25 million, he could be an enticing option for clubs looking to bolster their defensive ranks. Let’s take a look at five clubs, who might sign him in the summer.
5. Inter Milan
One of the potential suitors for Tagliafico could be Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri recently lifted their first Serie A title since 2010 and broke the decade long hegemony of rivals Juventus.
But Antonio Conte is not one to stop at this. His relentlessness would certainly push him to get a player of Tagliafico’s quality at such a fee, as competition for Achraf Hakimi. Tagliafico would be an upgrade on 35-year-old backup Aleksandr Kolarov and could offer more for the club.
4. Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid are weighing up options for signing Nicolas Tagliafico. Los Rojiblancos are competing for the La Liga title this season but their stronghold on the top position has fizzled out in recent weeks, bringing Real Madrid and Barcelona back into the hunt.
One of the key areas that Diego Simeone would want to address is the left-back position. The dynamism of the Argentine in both ends of the pitch could prove to be fruitful, where Renan Lodi has struggled. Signing Tagliafico could also add to the advantage for Atletico with his accurate crossing abilities and work-rate.
3. Paris Saint-Germain
Another club that could be looking into adding Nicolas Tagliafico is Paris-Saint Germain. The French club have the names in attack but are looking to bolster their defensive options. The addition of the left back could be a significant addition to their lineup for years to come.
Tagliafico cannot ask for better supporting players on the wing in Mbappe and Neymar. He would also bolster the defence significantly, which has often haunted PSG.
Liverpool could certainly do a world of good signing the Argentine. While they have great young defenders in Tsimikas, Nat Phillips and Ben Davies – Nicolas Tagliafico could be an able backup to Andy Robertson.
While he may not offer the elite attacking output and work-rate of the Scotsman, Tagliafico’s presence and his fitness would add significant strength to the Liverpool squad.
1. Leeds United
The prime suitors to sign Nicolas Tagliafico are Leeds United, with multiple reports suggesting the initial contacts have been made.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men have had a splendid season in the Premier League. They are in 11th position currently (at the time of writing). They have also stood up to the top clubs and made themselves the team to watch out for in the Premier League.
While their possessional and attacking quality is there for all to see, the defensive department is where they would look to improve. Tagliafico’s addition makes sense in this case. He averages 3.8 tackles and interceptions/game which would put him right into their lineup. His attacking output also offers the additional edge that The Peacocks might have been missing this season.
