Top five clubs who could sign Sergio Aguero in the summer
The Argentine will leave Manchester City at the end of the 2020-21 season.
Sergio Aguero is set to leave Manchester City at the end of the 2020-21 season, after spending a decade with them. The Argentine is most famous for winning the Cityzens their first Premier League title in 2012.
There has been a lot of anticipation of his next destination since the news of his impending departure broke out. The forward will be a free agent and can be signed without having to pay a transfer fee. Signing a player like Aguero on a free transfer in a pandemic affected market would be the deal of the summer window.
There are a few elite clubs who are in the running to secure his signature, given he has a lot to offer at the highest level. Here are top five clubs who could sign Sergio Aguero in the summer.
5. Chelsea
Chelsea are in dire need for a striker who can finish the chances created by their in-form midfielders. Thomas Tuchel has expressed admiration towards Sergio Aguero recently and the player would be a perfect fit for the Blues.
According to reports, the Argentine will prefer to stay in the Premier League after leaving the Citizens. In a scenario Chelsea are not able to sign Erling Haaland, their top transfer target, Sergio Aguero would be a sensational signing for the London-based club.
4. Manchester United
Manchester United are also in the running for Sergio Aguero’s signature. An out-of-form Anthony Martial and injury-stricken Edinson Cavani has created a need for a reliable striker upfront. Moreover, reports have recently hinted about the club looking towards free transfers, with room for only one marquee signing.
The opportunity is perfect given the circumstances and the possibility of signing a world class striker like Aguero on a free. The striker will be assured the best package if he decides to sign with the Red Devils, even though they are the direct rivals of his current employers.
3. Atletico Madrid
Reports from Spain have put Atletico Madrid as a possible destination for Sergio Aguero for the next season. The Argentine could prefer to move back to his former club and work with fellow countryman, Diego Simeone.
There is a room for another striker at the La Liga outfit since the departure of Diego Costa. A partnership with Luis Suarez could be mouthwatering and too good to pass on. The 32-year-old has fond memories of his time with Atletico Madrid and could play for them again.
2. Arsenal
Arsenal have emerged as one of the clubs who are strongly pushing to sign Sergio Aguero. Mikel Arteta has worked with the striker at Manchester City, while he was the assistant manager there to Pep Guardiola. The Gunners need more firepower upfront, especially due to the worrying form of their skipper, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The preference to stay in the Premier League and the possibility to move to London could work in Arsenal’s favor. The club has struggled financially in recent times, therefore signing a player of Aguero’s quality on a free transfer is too good to pass out on.
1. FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona are the frontrunners to sign Sergio Aguero, according to early reports from Spain. The La Liga giants are seriously lacking attacking options. They are on the lookout for a new striker and Aguero is one of the names strongly considered.
Joan Laporta, since being elected as the new president, will hope to retain Lionel Messi and sign Sergio Aguero. The Argentine duo will certainly be a force to reckon with. Moreover, Barcelona are going through one of the worst phases in terms of finances, and a free transfer for Aguero solves multiple issues in one go.
