These custodians have achieved the rare feat of scoring multiple goals in their career.
The art of goalscoring is one that comes rare to the goalkeepers. They are trained to stop the ball from going into the net, rather than putting the ball inside it. However, there have been a few goalkeepers in the world of football who took it upon themselves to stop the goals from going in and score the goals on the other end.
Alisson Becker of Liverpool scored an incredible headed goal in the dying minutes recently in a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League. The incident served to remind everyone of the rare nature of a goalkeeper getting a goal in a game of football.
Keeping that in mind, here is a look at the top five goalkeepers who have scored the most number of goals in the 21st century:
Vincent Enyema - 20 goals
Vincent Enyema is a Nigerian goalkeeper who has retired from professional football. He hung up his boots in June 2020 after a decorated career playing for several clubs. The custodian most notably featured for teams like LOSC Lille in France and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel among others.
The shot-stopper scored 20 goals across in his career. He was the main penalty taker for Hapoel Tel Aviv. Enyema also has over a century of caps for the Nigerian national team.
Sebastian Saja - 25 goals
Sebastian Saja is up next in the rankings, who scored 25 goals. The custodian has played for several high-profile clubs like Real Zaragoza, AEK Athens and Racing Club among others. He also featured four times for the Argentina national team.
Saja has retired from football as a professional after hanging his boots in July 2017. Interestingly, he is currently working as the goalkeeping coach at Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham.
Marcio - 34 goals
Marcio is another high-scoring goalkeeper from South America where the custodians tend to be a little more adventurous. The Brazilian scored 34 goals across his career, mainly from set-piece situations.
All of his goals came for Atlético Clube Goianiense, a club that plays in the first-division in Brazil. The former Bahia player has retired as a professional.
Johnny Vegas - 45 goals
Johnny Vegas is second on the list in the ranking of most goals scored by a goalkeeper in the 21st century. The custodian scored 45 goals in his career. He has also represented the Peru national team four times in his time as a professional.However, he retired from the game in April 2017.
Johnny Vegas played for several teams and went through several transfers before hanging up his boots within the Peru association league. He scored majorly from the penalty spot and aa few goals from open play as well.
Rogerio Ceni - 131 goals
Rogerio Ceni is the all-time leading goalkeeper for number of goals scored. He scored an incredible 131 goals in his lifetime as a shot-stopper. The Brazil international is a FIFA World Cup winner as well when the South American nation won the 2002 tournament.
Ceni is a club legend at Sao Paulo where he won nine trophies overall. Even more incredibly, Ceni did not only score from penalty kicks, he was extremely lethal from free-kicks as well. He retired from football as a player in December 2015 and is currently the manager at Flamengo.
