The Real Madrid defender is tied with Iker Casillas as Spain's highest-capped player with 167 appearances.

Sergio Ramos talked to the media after Spain’s 4-0 victory over Faroe Island yesterday. He stated his aspiration to achieve the UEFA Champions League success yet again with Real Madrid in the ongoing season.

Ramos, who tied with Iker Casillas as the country’s highest-capped player with 167 appearances said, “I don’t think I’ve achieved all my dreams, I would have retired already! I like to press the reset button and come back every year with new hopes and excitements. After what happened last season with our disastrous year I want to raise another Champions League trophy.”

Real Madrid failed to bag any major trophy in the last campaign. The previous season was also marked with two sackings and the subsequent arrival of Zinedine Zidane as the manager of the club.

However, they were ousted by a vibrant AFC Ajax side in the Round of 16. For a club that had won the UCL thrice in a row until last season, this defeat came as a major shock. Additionally, the Los Blancos finished third in the La Liga as well, eventually concluding a below-par season as per their expectations.

Ramos’ current contract with the club lasts till 2021. There are two UCLs to be played within that time span, and considering the club’s ability to step up the gear and performances on the big stage, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they actually end up accomplishing the Champions League victory again by then.

Speaking of his remarkable feat with the national team, Ramos stated, “It’s such a joy to tie Casillas, my excitement to keep going is still there, I like to enjoy each year and my goal is to reach and possibly exceed the 200 caps. I was lucky enough to make my debut while I was still very young and I had the trust from each and every coach. I hope I can defend this badge for many years.”

The 33-year-old is still a leader for both his club and country. With the European Championships coming up next year and the FIFA World Cup in 2022, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to expect him to continue playing for Spain for a considerable period of time in the future.

Undoubtedly, his desire to play 200 matches for the La Roja could be attained accordingly.
