We were too defensive, which cost us-Fernandes
The Churchill boss promised better performances after his other two foreigners join the team...
Churchill Brothers completed a hat-trick of defeats as they went down 2-0 to East Bengal in the I-League match played at Tilak Maidan Vasco yesterday.
Churchill head coach Alfred Fernandes was disappointed after a defeat against the Kolkata giants and he could not hide it in the post-match media interaction.
“East Bengal were well organised and had quality foreigners. We had plans for them but we were too defensive, which cost us and we conceded two goals,” Fernandes said.
However, the Goan coach is confident of his team's performances in the future matches after the arrival of his other two foreign players.
“Once our other two foreigners, one striker and one defender join the team, we will be much stronger than what we are now. Then we will look out for the full three points in full swing and that will be the time when we will be counted,” Fernandes said in a confident tone.
In yesterday’s match, experienced players like Clifford Miranda, Denzil Franco and Satish Singh were not even seen on Churchill's bench but as per coach Fernandes, he counts the performance and the form of the player and not his experience.
“The players who are in top 18 now have all competed for their place and places are not for granted. You need to compete for it, so for me whoever plays well he will be in, but I have all quality players and everyone will fight for it. I am sure that in the coming matches everyone will get their chance,” The 50-year old explained.
Like in the last match against Mumbai FC, Anthony Wolfe’s performance was poor in the match and it went worst for the Trinidadian striker when home supporters requested coach Fernandes to replace him with any Indian player, with big shouts from the stands. Unlike before, coach Fernandes did not defend him this time in front of the media and expressed his disappointment.
