Salah’s Liverpool contract will expire after the end of the season.
Mohamed Salah of Liverpool is a target for Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal, who hope to sign him in time for the Club World Cup next summer. At the same time, reports also suggest that FC Barcelona are also interested in signing the Liverpool forward on a free transfer.
Salah’s current deal expires on June 30 and he is yet to sign a new contract with the Reds. In recent years, the Egypt international has been strongly linked to a move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League; last summer, Liverpool turned down a £150 million approach from then-champions Al-Ittihad.
Since then, Salah has repeatedly stated that the 2024–25 season will be his last one at Liverpool. The attacker shared a mysterious message on social media on Saturday after scoring the game-winning goal in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Brighton at home.
“Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only one champion in the end,” Salah wrote. “That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”
With his Liverpool contract extension yet to be finalised Salah could sign a lucrative contract with Al-Hilal prior to the start of the recently extended Club World Cup on June 15. With Manchester City and Chelsea representing the Premier League, the defending Saudi champions have advanced to the 32-team competition in the United States.
“You interpreted it in a way that maybe other people don’t,” Slot replied, with two more star players, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, also out of contract next June. “I don’t look at Instagram posts of my players, I only talk to them which you can’t, which is the advantage I have.
Arne Slot on Mohamed Salah’s future
However, it might be challenging for Al-Hilal to arrange a free transfer within their desired time period because Salah’s deal doesn’t expire until the end of June. Following the previously mentioned social media post, Reds manager Arne Slot was questioned about the 31-year-old’s future.
“Mo is in a very good place at the moment. As long as he has been at Liverpool, he has been in a very good place, but this season again as well. I am hoping he will make a post after tomorrow and on Saturday again. What he said with that, that is not important. For me what is important is how he plays and what he tells me when we have conversations.”
