Alisson Becker speaks on Liverpool's playing style under Jurgen Klopp vs Arne Slot
The Reds are favourites to win the Premier League under Slot.
Alisson Becker reveals the significant changes from the Jurgen Klopp era to Liverpool under Arne Slot.
Alisson Becker has a unique perspective on Anfield’s improvements. The Brazilian, a mainstay of the Jurgen Klopp era, has established himself as something of a legend on Merseyside in his own right. His £65 million move from AS Roma in 2018 helped speed up the race for the big trophies in the game.
Alisson won the Champions League within a year of his historic transfer from Roma, and he went one step further in 2020 when he led the Reds to their first league (Premier League) championship in thirty years.
Few would argue with his standing as Liverpool’s best gloveman of the Premier League period, and by the point that he leaves the team, the 31-year-old will have had such an impact that he can hold his own in discussion with legendary custodians such as Bruce Grobbelaar and the late Ray Clemence.
Alisson is one of only a few players left from the 2019–2020 season when Klopp’s Reds won the Premier League and the Champions League. Although his two-month absence due to a hamstring injury was not ideal, the Brazil international remains in an ideal position to observe the way the Arne Slot era is developing.
As Liverpool get ready to enter 2025 as Premier League and Champions League leaders under their new manager Slot, the main goalkeeper believes that it’s too early to draw any clear similarities between the two head coaches. But he acknowledges that something is starting to stir.
“Well, we have a few players that are playing here long enough, that experienced the highest peak of maybe the Jurgen Klopp era, if we can say that, and the lowest as well,” Alisson says. “So all these kinds of things you can use as a boost of energy, and we know we can see the quality that we have so that’s something that brings you energy and makes you put a lot of effort in to achieve good things, those players that they deserve.
“They work hard, they have quality, and we know that in the future we’re going to remember more about the good moments now that you had together in football. Winning is not everything, of course, but it’s a big part of football so I want to remember this team as a winning team.
“I don’t think it’s too similar [to the 2020 side], two different teams. A few players still play in the team but we have a little bit different style now, more ball possession, before it was really straightforward: a lot of transition, a lot of intensity. That team was really special, we achieved great things, it was the first Premier League title for this club in a long time.”
