La Albiceleste have been undefeated so far.

Defending champions Argentina have had a perfect start to their title defense in the 2024 Copa America, booking their place in the quarterfinals with an outstanding group stage performance. They topped Group A with a flawless record of three wins, three clean sheets, and five goals scored.

La Albiceleste kicked off the tournament with a hard-fought 2-0 win against debutants Canada, thanks to second-half goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. Lionel Scaloni’s side maintained their momentum with a narrow 1-0 victory against a robust Chile, with super-sub Lautaro Martinez netting a late winner.

Heading into their final group game, Argentina were without their captain and star player, Lionel Messi, who sustained a groin/thigh injury in the previous match. Despite Messi’s absence, Argentina secured a solid 2-0 win against bottom-placed Peru, with Lautaro Martinez scoring both goals, making him the competition’s top scorer with four goals.

Throughout their group stage run, Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina showcased a rock-solid defense, an energetic midfield, and a clinical attack. The 2022 World Cup winners are now set to face Ecuador at the NRG Stadium in the quarterfinals. La Tri finished second in Group B, behind table-toppers Venezuela.

The biggest concern for the in-form La Albiceleste heading into the knockout rounds is the uncertainty regarding Lionel Messi’s availability. Messi had a promising start to the tournament, providing a beautiful assist in the win against Canada. However, he suffered a groin/thigh injury after the match against Chile, causing him to miss Argentina’s final group game against Peru.

Despite various theories about the severity of his injury, Messi returned to full training, participating in the team’s complete session ahead of the quarterfinal. However, his participation in the crucial match remains uncertain, as Lionel Scaloni and his coaching staff have yet to make a final decision.

Lionel Messi has enjoyed an illustrious international career, amassing 108 goals in 184 caps, making him Argentina’s all-time top scorer. He hopes to get fit in time to lead La Albiceleste in their quest for another international trophy.
