The defending champions have already qualified for the quarter-finals.

Argentina defeated Chile by a slim 1-0 margin in New Jersey on Wednesday to become the first country to guarantee their place in the Copa America 2024 quarter-finals.

Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan made a lasting impression off the bench in that game as well after already scoring as a substitute in La Albiceleste’s 2-0 triumph against Canada. He latched on to an errant ball in a packed penalty area to sneak home the game’s crucial winning goal in the 88th minute.

With six points from six games, Lionel Scaloni’s team assured a spot in the top two in Group A with one game remaining. They also know that a win on Sunday will solidify their position at the top.

With just one point from their first two Group A matches against Chile and Canada, Peru could be heading out of the Copa America group for the first time since 1995.

La Blanquirroja, the runners-up in 2019 and semi-finalists in 2021, drew 0-0 with Chile in the opening match before losing narrowly 1-0 to Canada, the tournament’s newcomers on Wednesday with 10 men.

Miguel Araujo’s punishment in the 59th minute for a brilliant attempted tackle proved costly for Peru, as striker Jonathan David scored in the 74th minute, sealing the close match in Kansas.
