Few Premier League matches had as much on the line as tonight’s match between Arsenal and Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

With a victory, the Gunners would increase their advantage at the top to five points, putting them solidly in charge going into the second half of the season and one step closer to winning their first championship since 2003–04.

With a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Saturday night, Arsenal quickly returned to the top of the Premier League after being ousted by their closest rivals, Manchester City.

By extending that streak tonight, the league leaders, who are currently two points ahead of their closest rivals and three ahead of Aston Villa, can guarantee they finish 2025 in first position.

However, Arsenal have only gained four points in their last five encounters with Villa after losing three of them, including their most recent loss in the West Midlands.

Since then, the Villans have picked up more wins (11) and more points (36) than any other Premier League team, which is quite a comeback considering they were winless after five matchdays and sitting in 18th place.

Emery will now return to the Emirates, where he has done fairly well since departing, knowing that another win would put them level on points with the Gunners.
