Athletic Club vs Manchester United: All-time head-to-head record

The Red Devils and Bilbao have shared the pitch during European nights many times.

Manchester United and Athletic Club have often faced each other in European competitions, but the Spanish club has always been victorious against the English side.

United trail Athletic in the all-time record, before the Red Devils finally broke their winless run against them in their recent Europa League semi-final 3-0 win in the first leg.

Manchester United have a stellar continental record, but they have lost three of their last four UEFA encounters against Athletic Club. Their only victory occurred in February 1957.

The floodlights at Old Trafford were broken during the Red Devils’ home victory in the second leg of a European Cup quarterfinal at Manchester City’s Maine Road, when they overcame a 5-3 deficit to win 6-5 on aggregate.

The two were then reunited almost fifty years later, this time in the Europa League’s round of sixteen.

Despite Wayne Rooney’s brace, the Basque team won 3-2 in England thanks to goals from Fernando Llorente, Oscar de Marcos, and Iker Muniain in the second half. They then won 2-1 at home to complete their victory.

Athletic eventually advanced to that season’s final under innovative coach Marcelo Bielsa, who defeated United’s illustrious manager Alex Ferguson in both legs. However, they lost the final in the tournament.

The LaLiga team most recently appeared to have won another match in a 2023 friendly when emerging star Nico Williams appeared to have scored the game-winning goal, until Facundo Pellistri equalised in the 89th minute in Dublin.
