The Spanish club want to add a new midfielder this summer.
Atletico Madrid are now attempting to sign N’Golo Kante from Al Ittihad after the deal for Conor Gallagher has taken a U-turn.
Relevo claims that Atletico are now considering Kante since there is increasing uncertainty around their prospects of signing Gallagher, who is currently returning to London, as per the report.
Kante, who left Chelsea to play in Saudi Arabia, is undoubtedly still a valuable asset to several elite European teams. Should Atletico fail to acquire Gallagher, he is expected to step in to cover the defensive midfield void.
During his prime years at Stamford Bridge, Kante was among the top players in Europe, and he performed admirably this summer at Euro 2024 while playing for the French national team.
The 33-year-old’s potential departure from Saudi Arabia and swift return to Europe will be intriguing to watch.
But the Gallagher deal is not completely off as Chelsea will hope to sell the player to the Spanish side before the end of the transfer window.
Though the transfer market could yet have a few surprises in store for us, we should find out soon enough! Atletico still have two priorities for the defence, where David Hancko, Piero Hincapie, and Clement Lenglet have been targeted by the club.
Kante would undoubtedly give Atletico Madrid’s midfield more legs, but he might not be the best option in the long run.
Even if he were to add more grit, his ball-playing talent is not nearly on par with that of Rodrigo de Paul and captain Koke. Diego Simeone could see Antoine Griezmann’s decline in more minutes after the Spanish team signed Julian Alvarez.
