Barcelona vs Real Madrid could take place at Wembley: Report

The Catalan club’s home ground Camp Nou was expected to host the game.

Due to the confusion surrounding Barcelona’s £1.25 billion reconstruction of Camp Nou, the EL Clasico may end up taking place in Wembley.

While their renowned home field is undergoing a significant renovation, the Spanish club have been playing at Catalonia’s Olympic Stadium for almost two years.

Barcelona wanted to get back to the Nou Camp before the season ended because it would be the ideal venue for a possible May 11 title matchup with bitter rivals Real Madrid.

However, the news that the Nou Camp won’t likely be finished before the upcoming season has upended Barca’s preparations. The new stadium is being constructed on the foundations of the old arena, which was demolished in June 2023.

But despite paying out £1.25bn to boost capacity from 99,354 to over 105,000, Barcelona chiefs now worry the Nou Camp will not be done in time for the upcoming El Clasico.

It puts them contemplating life without a base for the remaining month of the season, with their contract on their interim Olympic Stadium home finishing in April. An extension until the summer seems like the best course of action.

However, a number of concerts in May, including the opening performance of the Rolling Stones’ forthcoming European tour, have already sold out the 58,000-seater Olympic Stadium.

Barcelona are now considering the potential of playing their encounter against Real abroad, having recently seen a December showdown against Atletico Madrid in America fail.

An El Clasico in the US has always been a goal of LaLiga’s executives, but given the current time frame, it is highly unlikely.

Rather, the reports say that because Barcelona won their first European Cup there in 1992, Wembley has become a wildcard alternative. Because of the London stadium’s enormous 90,000 capacity, supporters of both teams could easily fit inside.

The game may wind up being a title decider because Barcelona want to close the seven-point difference to league leaders Real before then. This season, Hansi Flick’s team has already defeated their opponents three times and will hope to make a clean sweep of four wins.
