The Frenchman earlier rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s offer.
According to reports, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel has decided to join Manchester United as his next team.
United were up against fierce competition from Premier League rivals for the £50 million Frenchman. Seven clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Arsenal, had expressed interest in the 19-year-old.
However, just over twenty-four hours before the winter transfer deadline, Sky Germany claims that the Red Devils have managed to win the 19-year-old over and are now close to signing him.
Having accepted personal terms with the player, United now have to reach a deal with Bayern. The Bavarian powerhouse have reportedly denied a loan request from the club, supposedly not delighted with what is offered on the table.
Like Marcus Rashford, who is expected to complete a loan deal with Aston Villa, Tel, a French youth international, may operate on the right flank or on the left of a front three in the England international’s place.
On the morning of Friday, Max Eberl, the sporting director for Bayern Munich, told Sky Germany: “It’s also about generating transfer revenue. Mathys is an incredibly sought-after player.
“Whether it will be a loan or a sale, we will discuss it in the coming days and hours.”
However, since Vincent Kompany joined Bayern Munich before the 2024–2025 season, Tel has had difficulty getting playing time. He has made 14 appearances for the Munich-based team this season and has only managed one assist with no goals.
Amorim, who has been left with fewer options on the wings has struggled during his time at the club so far and continues to have less firepower up front.
Because of this, Tel’s arrival may cause Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to fall lower down the hierarchy, giving Amorim access to a striker of his choosing at last.
Despite spending a lot of time on the bench, Tel recorded 16 goals in his first 83 games for the Bundesliga powerhouses. However, considering his age, he fits with United’s strategy of acquiring young players with promise. On Sunday afternoon, 18-year-old Ayden Heaven and 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu were introduced as United players at Old Trafford.
