The Red Devils will be ready to bounce back after opening match defeat in Euro 2024.

From the first whistle, it seemed like a done deal, but Belgium were devastated by yet another major tournament defeat. They were lamenting their lack of a decisive moment and the biggest surprise of the first Euro 2024 matchday was undoubtedly the VAR rulings that went against them.

In only seven minutes, the net widened as Ivan Schranz managed to stay onside and score off a rebound. On the other hand, Romelu Lukaku was unlucky to have two goals disallowed—one for offside and the other for Lois Openda’s handball, as checked by the new technology.

This heartbreaking setback was Belgium‘s first since losing to Morocco in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and it also handed Domenico Tedesco his first defeat as manager of the Red Devils.

Few had predicted a three-goal Romanian victory over Ukraine in Euro 2024. In fact, many had even tipped Serhiy Rebrov’s team as dark horses. However, in large part because of an Andriy Lunin disaster class, the Tricolours brightened up the yellow-clad Allianz Arena.

After two errors from Lunin helped two long-range goals from Nicolae Stanciu and Razvan Marin, Denis Dragus completed the 3-0 win for Edward Iordanescu’s team, who now hold the record for the greatest victory in Romanian football’s European history.

The Tricolours’ only victory at the continental tournament prior to the 2024 edition was a 3-2 victory over England in 2000. They did not win any games in either the 2008 or 2016 tournaments.
