Billy Sharp says he looks up to Cristiano Ronaldo as an inspiration

Sharp who is 39-year-old plays for Doncaster Rovers.

Billy Sharp asserts that Cristiano Ronaldo motivates him to do even greater things in his football career despite being in touching distance of early 40s.

With 256 goals, Sharp is the top league scorer in English football, and he hopes to help Doncaster Rovers defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup tonight. Cristiano Ronaldo turned 40 on Wednesday and has already scored his first goal as a 40-year-old in an Al-Nassr game. Sharp says that the Portuguese superstar motivates him to achieve greater things in his playing career.

Sharp wants to continue playing when he turns 40 and hopes to reach 300 goals next season. He has 283 career goals.

“Look at Ronaldo, he was 40 on the same day I was 39 and he’s still playing,” Sharp said. “He’s still got goals he wants to achieve. I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon, so I reckon he’ll fulfil his goal of playing in the next World Cup. He’s in incredible shape and probably could play for another five years. ”

“He inspires you. He’s someone you look up to and his longevity, to still be playing at the level he is with Portugal is something else.

“I’m playing in the FA Cup at 39 and I’m proud of that. I want to be playing when I’m 40. I need 20 more for 300 league goals and I’ll be proud of that too.”

With ten goals in his third stint with the South Yorkshire club, Billy Sharp, who still holds the record for Rovers’ record signing at £1.15 million in 2010, hopes to assist Grant McCann’s team in getting promoted from League Two.

He has scored twice versus Palace while playing for three different clubs. In December 2009, he scored in Doncaster’s 3-0 Championship victory over Palace at Selhurst Park. Since Doncaster are the lowest-ranked team still in the Cup, Sharp is aware that the odds are stacked against them in tonight’s fourth-round match at the Eco-Power Stadium.
