The Egyptian’s future at the club has come under big scrutiny.

According to a top body language specialist, Mohamed Salah’s poignant comeback against Brighton at Anfield might have been his last time wearing a Liverpool shirt.

The Egyptian star appeared to be saying goodbye as he gets ready to leave for Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) duty, according to post-match analysis, despite a warm response from Kop supporters.

Salah made his way back to Anfield on Saturday afternoon. Liverpool defeated Brighton in the league in a match that was closely watched because of the winger’s uncertain future.

Salah played during the game and contributed to the victory after being reinstated to the squad post internal discussions. But attention soon turned to what happened after the final whistle.

Mohamed Salah took his time walking around the field after the game ended while the Anfield crowd yelled his name and applauded him. There were banners in the grandstand commemorating his accomplishments, and the crowd responded with sustained applause that exuded a feeling of occasion. In the midst of a tumultuous few weeks marked by form issues and off-field stress, this moment stood out.

Mohamed Salah’s impending departure for AFCON made the Brighton game even more important. A widespread discussion has been sparked over whether Liverpool fans had just witnessed the last chapter of one of the Merseyside club’s best players, driven by the poignant images and their timing.

Talking to OLBG, prominent UK body language expert Darren Stanton provided an exciting assessment of Salah’s attitude following the fixture.

He said: “Yeah, basically, Mohamed Salah looked very, very emotional after the Brighton game. I think it was almost like his epitaph. I don’t think we’re going to see him again, if I’m honest.”

Stanton further explained on why he feels the moment appeared to be as such, adding: “Yes, he had tears in his eyes when he was clapping along with the crowd, so I think that’s his swan song, his kind of farewell. I think even though it’s not formal, I think he knows in his heart that he’s never going to be in that situation and walk on that pitch again.”

The expert culminated by detailing on the other details of Salah’s body language: “Salah had an expression, it was sadness and disappointment because, obviously, things hadn’t gone differently. Principally, he was quite sad, quite emotional, had tears in his eyes, and facially, he was flashing micro-expressions of sadness.”

The latter part of 2025 has been characterised by uncertainty. Salah was frequently benched and rotated after a difficult run of results due to a decline in form and tactical adjustments.

Mohamed Salah’s public remarks after those choices revealed conflict with Arne Slot behind the scenes and raised previously unheard-of concerns about his long-term future with the team.

As demonstrated by the response at Anfield against Brighton, which highlighted Salah’s lasting popularity and the respect he commands, his relationship with supporters has remained solid despite those problems.
