Bruno Fernandes backs Harry Kane to win Ballon d'Or

Bruno Fernandes, captain of Manchester United, believes Harry Kane made the right decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Bayern Munich to begin winning trophies. Despite not winning any trophies during his 14-year tenure, the striker left Spurs in the summer of 2023 as their all-time top scorer.
In the end, Kane surpassed Jimmy Greaves as Spurs’ most prolific scorer in history with 280 goals. However, the England captain, who is regarded as one of the world’s top players, failed to put an end to the north Londoners’ trophy drought.
He left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023 with just one year left on his contract. But it wasn’t until 2025 that he won a trophy and propelled the Bavarians back to the Bundesliga title.
There is speculation that Harry Kane might even become the next Ballon d’Or winner as Bayern are poised to win the German Bundesliga again and are one of the favourites in the Champions League.
Fernandes reveals what would have happened if Kane had continued at Spurs
In a Sunday Times interview, Fernandes stated that although trophies shouldn’t be used to gauge a player’s calibre, he respected Harry Kane for pushing himself.
“We’ve seen many Ballon d’Or winners who haven’t won the Champions League. They still won because they were the best,” Fernandes said.
“Obviously, it’s easier for me to say because I haven’t won many trophies. And trophies are important. But at the same time, you don’t play by yourself. It’s not tennis.”
“If he had stayed [at Tottenham] another one or two seasons, he’d have been the best goalscorer ever in the Premier League. So, would he have been a legend or not? He would.”
“He decided to go to Bayern and the decision is good because he knows he has a big chance of winning trophies. And now we’re talking about Harry Kane that is scoring the same amount of goals he was scoring at Tottenham, but he might win a Ballon d’Or now because he’s going to win trophies.”
Earlier this past week, Harry Kane made headlines when he scored in Bayern’s 2-1 victory against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal after returning from injury. In just 41 games, that brought his season total to 49.
