The midfielder blamed the referee for messing with his spot-kick routine.
Referee Chris Kavanagh came under fire from Bruno Fernandes for not âapologisingâ for his role in the Manchester United captainâs missed penalty in Sundayâs 1-1 draw at Fulham in Premier League 2025-26 Gameweek 2.
Emile Smith Rowe cancelled out Leny Yoroâs deflected second-half opening, and Marco Silvaâs team held United to a 1-1 draw. Fernandes had squandered an earlier opportunity to give United the lead when he fired a first-half penalty over the crossbar.
Bruno Fernandes takes a big at the referee for bumping into him when he was taking a penalty
The Portugal international was forced to re-spot the ball after he clashed with official Kavanagh while he was walking back to begin his run-up after putting the ball onto the penalty spot.
âAs a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didnât apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment, but thatâs not the excuse for missing the penalty. I had a very bad hit on the ball. I put my foot too under the ball and thatâs why it ended up going over the bar.â
Fernandes added that he anticipated the official to apologise, but he did not, even though he did not hold Kavanagh responsible for the error. âI was upset,â.
After losing to Arsenal at home last week before the trip to Fulham, United are yet to win their first game of the season.
Bruno Fernandes also made no secret of his displeasure with Unitedâs further poor performance at Craven Cottage.
âWe cannot be satisfied with one point,â Fernandes said.
âWe came here to win the game. We were defending very well, but in one of them they got their goal. For us, it is very disappointing to not win the game today.â
