The Frenchman couldn’t score a goal against Atletico last night.

Carlo Ancelotti gave his assessment of Kylian Mbappe’s performance after he the field immediately following Real Madrid’s victory against Atletico in the Champions League first-leg round of 16.

The Frenchman failed to get on the score sheet despite coming close to finding the back of the net many times against Atletico. This was the second game Mbappe has not scored after he also couldn’t register a goal against Real Betis.

However, despite Mbappe’s struggling to score a goal, the Los Blancos managed to secure a win when their other star players, such as Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz, stepped up on the big occasion.

Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz scored goals to help Real defeat their city rivals 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 match. However, Mbappe did not appear delighted as he left the field at full time and remained silent the entire evening.

But Ancelotti provided a healthy verdict on Mbappe’s performance, and he knew why the former Paris Saint-Germain star couldn’t score, speaking to the media post-game.

Ancelotti said: “Mbappe wasn’t at his best but he still did his job because it’s not easy to play against Atletico’s defence.”

Mbappe, who has been playing better recently in a Real shirt after joining the club on a free transfer in the summer, had a poor night. In 41 games, the Frenchman has notched 28 goals, also a spectacular hat-trick against Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League play-off stage a month ago.

However, it will be a small goal drought for the forward as he will hope to break the streak in the next game when Real returns to action this weekend.

Real Madrid, who are now three points below leaders Barcelona in LaLiga, are going through a tight schedule. Prior to the second leg against Atletico next midweek, they meet Rayo Vallecano in the league on Sunday lunchtime.
