The Italian coach is unlikely to spend any time in prison.
Carlo Ancelotti received a prison sentence of one year, according to the EFE agency. In 2014, while coaching Real Madrid, the Brazilian coach was found guilty of tax fraud and received a 12-month prison sentence.
During the same procedure, the Italian coach was cleared of a potential tax violation from 2015 that also involved the acquisition of his image rights while he worked for Real Madrid.
However, he was exonerated of additional potential tax offences in 2015. It also had to do with the acquisition of his image rights during his time at Real Madrid.
However, with the backing of actual facts, Ancelotti is unlikely to spend any time in prison despite the sentence.
Someone without prior convictions is rarely required to spend jail time under Spanish law for any amount of time under two years for a non-violent offence.
In his first term as manager of Real Madrid, Ancelotti lasted three years until departing in 2016 to spend a season at Bayern Munich.
He moved back to the Spanish club in 2021 after stints with Everton and Napoli. But he left again this year to start his reign in Brazil. The 66-year-old allegedly deceived the tax office to evade paying more than £833,000 in income tax.
Although the former AC Milan manager seemingly evaded taxes in the past, Ancelotti has strongly denied any wrongdoing.
Although he acknowledged that he did not pay his fair share of taxes in 2014, he attributed this to mistakes made by his accountants.
Ancelotti insists he hasn’t infringed any laws, saying he didn’t stay in Spain for the 183 days he needed to pay taxes.
Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge, were also found guilty of tax fraud after they defrauded the government of £3.4 million between 2007 and 2009.
The Argentine was sentenced to 21 months in prison in 2016 for hiding his image rights revenues in tax havens. However, he ultimately had to pay a £223,000 punishment.
